March 5 marks the first Sunday in Lent, a day when many Episcopal parishes begin worship with The Great Litany. The Great Litany is an ancient prayer that includes a series of deprecations seeking deliverance from evil, spiritual harm, and natural calamities, petitions for forgiveness for sins we commit against God and one another, and general appeals pleading the power of Christ’s Incarnation, life, death and resurrection for God’s blessing and provision in a wide range of circumstances. It replaces the prayers of the people and the confession at the Holy Eucharist.
