Theologians-at-large Series
Who says a theologian has to go to Seminary and wear a collar? We tap our
parishioners and invite our lay people to share their passions with us. We
keep the focus centered around the God questions: where do the laity of the
world encounter God in their lives, or how do notable world figures make us
think differently about our own faith? Series includes speakers on
everything from architecture to Christian caring to Christmas celebrations.
Comparative Religion Studies
Dick Taliaferro is our Theologian-in-Residence and an MTS graduate of
Virginia Theological Seminary. His courses explore the historical and
theological intersections of our faith with other faiths. His series
generally have a serious and well-researched focus. Guest speakers are
Dick’s trademark. In October, he will explore the meeting points of General
Convention resolutions and Old and New Testament law.
Field Trips
Christian Education isn’t entirely inside. We are blessed to live on Washington DC’s doorstep, with full access to
the magnificent Smithsonian, the National Cathedral, and the natural world.
Field trips aim to help us explore our faith, and have fun and fellowship
outside our church walls. Past field trips include a visit to Palace and
Mosque at the National Gallery of Art for the “Where Christians and Muslims
Meet” course, The Secret Life of Bees author Sue Monk Kidd’s speech
at the National Cathedral, and attending Easter Vigil at the National
Cathedral. All members and guests of Trinity are welcome at all field
trips, regardless of whether you’ve attended the classes.
Lenten Series
During
Lent, we offer a Wednesday Soup-and-Bread supper series. We meet for a
supper of home-made soups and really good bread, share in supper
fellowship, have an education hour, and wrap up with a very short worship
time.
Our
2006 Lenten Series featured “Soup and Cinema for the Soul.”
The Silver Screen guided us through our 40 Lenten days. Each week from March 8 through April 5, we explored a
different major motion picture and discussed the same themes as presented
in different artists’ viewpoints. We ended our engagement with the
Silver Screen on Good Friday with a full-length showing of Jesus Christ
Super Star, open to all ages. After the movie, we enjoyed serious
in-depth discussion of what modern culture thinks we’re (that’s Jesus, we
Christians and the church) really all about.
Inquiring Minds Class
Never walked through the door of a church, ever? Wondering how can God be
Three-in-One? What makes Christianity unique? What makes Anglicans
different from the other churches? How do you become a member? Got
questions? We have answers. Join us for this several-times-yearly series as
we explore together the basic questions of our faith. Class ends with the
option of taking next steps. Baptism? Confirmation? Reception? Asking more
questions? It’s your choice and your spiritual journey. Join us! For
a look at a typical agenda, click Inquiring Minds Agenda.
Intercessory Prayer Ministry
This lay-led group seeks to walk together in a deeper prayer life. They
pray for our clergy, and seek to learn to look outward to God to better
understand God’s will in their lives. This group sponsors seminars and
small group experiences. They also sponsor the healing services of
Trinity. For further information, contact Edna Keith or click Intercessory Prayer Ministry here.
Growing
in Spirit and in Truth Series
On First
Sundays at Trinity Church our worship experience typically includes Morning
Prayer with Healing Rite at 10:30
am. During this service, instead of a
sermon or homily, clergy offer a teaching aimed at facilitating spiritual
growth.
This
teaching, part of the Growing in Spirit and in Truth series, empowers
worshippers with the practical tools we need to draw near to God and to
mature in the Christian faith. Worshipers receive a teaching
outline with exercises in the service bulletin
for the day.
Marriage Exploration and Preparation
Congratulations on your engagement! Now bring your beloved, and get ready
for the ride of your life. We already know you are compatible, so we don’t
do the mass class pop-psychology quizzes thing. Rather, these individual
sessions with our clergy focus on you and your chosen partner. We’ll
explore the questions of marriage, tell you about the process of getting
married in the Episcopal Church and at Trinity, and have a chance to work
through the engagement period in a very intentional way. The focus tends to
be on creating a Christian marriage and taking your place in community. For
information about our marriage preparation and process, click on Life
Events here.
